earn how to leverage your International Business degree in your first job and as you progress in your career. Develop ways to articulate the value you offer organizations because of your IB education and cross-cultural experiences. Interact with some of our most successful international business alumni. This conference will include a keynote speaker, breakout sessions and a panel discussion with DMSB IB alumni representing different functional majors, graduation years and career paths! Break times and a final reception provide the opportunity to network with your classmates and the alumni.

Admission is $15 per person and sessions will begin on the 8th floor at the Moore School.  Space is very limited and registration is by priority.  Dress is business formal.

BREAKOUT SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Breakout Session A: Recent Grads Share Lessons Learned in Getting the First Job
A question on most students’ minds is, “how do I get a job?”  In this interactive session you will learn from two IB students who recently navigated the job market and did so very successfully.  Issues may include:

What were you looking for in a job? 
How did you conduct your job search? 
How did you articulate your skills and which were emphasized? 
How did you choose between offers? 
How did you negotiate your salary/compensation? 
Once you landed the job, how does it match up with your expectations? 
What is your expected career path? 
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were a student?

Breakout Session B: Interactive Session -- Conducting a Targeted Job Search
An international business degree distinctly qualifies one for a variety of positions in the global market, including non-traditional and newly-created roles. Instead of looking only for positions that are currently available, IB students can highlight their unique capabilities to secure an ideal position with a targeted job search. This breakout session will emphasize research and organizational skills to proactively pursue a position tailored to individual goals and strengths. Participants will build a target company list by prioritizing criteria, such as job function, geographic location, and industry. From that list, participants will learn how to research companies and industries, including important factors like corporate culture, financial stability, growth opportunity, and more. The session will be interactive and computer-based; one can expect to leave with a preliminary list of target companies, research knowledge, and practical tips for reaching out to potential employers.

Breakout Session C: The 7 'Tudes -- Attitudes Needed for Success in Global Business
Companies naturally seek growth and international expansion is often a seemingly attractive path.  However, many organizations harbor hidden internal barriers to success, which if left unidentified and unaddressed can sabotage what otherwise could be a big win.  In this interactive session you will learn about the “7 'Tudes of International Expansion” which can help a company - and you as future international managers - to avoid the traps that limit success. The seven “Tudes” diagnostic assesses: attitude – or commercial orientation, aptitude – or product and market knowledge, magnitude – or size of the opportunity vis-à-vis the company, latitude – or the willingness to adapt to the opportunity, rectitude – or the legal and ethical implications, exactitude – or the willingness to accept risk in the numbers and, fortitude – or the commitment to the initiative. 

 

BIOS OF GUEST SPEAKERS

Mark Schoen (MIBS '93) - Mark Schoen has more than 20 years of experience working in international markets with the majority of that coming in the field of retail technology. He joined Radiant Systems, Inc. in 1996 to develop and manage the international expansion of the Atlanta-based technology start up and remained with the company through its acquisition by NCR Corp. for $1.2 billion in 2011. During his tenure with Radiant, Mark worked extensively in Australia, China, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and Western Europe. He held expatriate posts in the Czech Republic, Australia and Austria in his role as President of the company’s international division.  Prior to joining Radiant, Mark worked at Accenture from 1993 to 1996, and spent two years between his undergraduate and graduate studies working a variety of jobs in Europe. Mark served as a vice president at NCR Corp from August 2011 until May of this year. Since September, Mark has been working with a number of retail-oriented technology companies as an independent consultant.  He is married and has two young daughters. 

Adam Kess (BS '13) - After graduation, Adam Kess joined Deloitte Consulting as a Business Analyst in the Strategy & Operations group. As a business analyst in the general management division, he serves clients in various industries.  His first focus has been the credit card division of a global bank. He has also participated in a pro-bono IT consulting project for a non-profit organization based in Atlanta. Beginning in early 2014, Adam will travel to Mexico to serve a global consumer goods company in a marketing strategy project. Outside of work, Adam enjoys cooking, international travel and community service. 

Jane Marrazzo (BS '11, MIB '12)

Emily Doyle - Emily Doyle is a Business Librarian and an Accounting Lecturer at Darla Moore School of Business. She joined the University of South Carolina after several years of industry experience that included for-profit and non-profit companies of all sizes and types of business organizations. Emily was the Accounting & Audit Manager at International Foundation for Electoral Systems in Washington, DC, where she managed financial reporting and audits in Africa and the Middle East. She was the Finance Director for Fathom Creative in DC, and she is a partner in JEJ, Inc., a real-estate holding company. Emily gained library and research experience while working at Georgetown University, World Bank, and The MIT Press. Her main focus at Moore is to provide instruction to students that will help prepare them for the research required to be a successful business professional. Additionally, she teaches a graduate Accounting class and assists faculty with academic research. Emily obtained her B.S. and Master’s in Accountancy from Auburn University and a M.S. in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University.

Doug Quackenbos (MIBS '92) - Since 2008, Doug Quackenbon has worked with Switzerland based Walter Meier (Manufacturing) Inc. as Head of Global Business Development for the Tools division in Nashville, Tennessee, where his main focus is on the Latin American and Caribbean markets.  Walter Meier sells industrial machinery and equipment under the JET, Wilton and Powermatic brands. Doug developed his marketing and sales career in the industrial and consumer product industries working for Newell Rubbermaid, Hilti, and Black & Decker/DeWalt.  Prior to joining Walter Meier, he most recently worked at Sonoco, where he served as Business Development Manager for the US-Canada joint venture of Cascades-Sonoco.  During his twenty-five year professional career, eleven of which were spent abroad, Doug has held positions in sales, marketing, and supply chain in the US and Canada, Latin America and Southern Europe.  Doug speaks fluent Spanish, Italian and French.  He is married to a Spaniard with whom he has two children and resides in Davidson, North Carolina.  

Stephanie Bedard (BS '11) - Stephanie Bedard graduated with honors from the South Carolina Honors College and from the Moore School of Business. She traveled before joining the Johnson & Johnson Global Operations Leadership Development (GOLD) program in March 2012 and relocated to New Brunswick, NJ, for her first of three rotations. In New Jersey, Stephanie worked in technical knowledge management and collaboration at the Johnson & Johnson World Headquarters. She is currently a Distribution Operations Analyst in Memphis, Tennessee, at Johnson & Johnson's largest medical device distribution center in North America. In two weeks, she will relocate to Los Angeles, California, for her final rotational assignment at Neutrogena Corporation in supply chain planning. Next year, Stephanie will transition into a Worldwide Engineering role at Johnson & Johnson Corporate to work in capital construction project management and delivery.

Cameron Cegala (BS '11) - Cameron Cegala joined Procter & Gamble after graduation as territory manager of Boston metro in the Oral Care division (brands: Crest and Oral-B).   She then moved to New York City to become the account manager of Queens for the Salon Professional Division (brands: Wella, Sebastian, Nioxin). She's will transition to her next role in approximately one year.  Cameron has been extensively involved in the P&G new hire/intern network and the women’s network, serving as a leader on the board.

Lucas Fox (BS '09) -  Upon graduation, Lucas Fox joined Eaton Corporation’s Financial Leadership Development Program (FLDP). The FLDP program is a three-year rotational program that is designed to expose participants to multiple facets of the company while gaining experience in various roles within the finance function. As an FLDP, I lived in Columbia, SC, Pittsburgh, PA and Williamsburg, VA.  Lucas rolled off of the FLDP program to become a Senior Analyst within Eaton’s Filtration Division headquartered in metro-NYC. Shortly after moving to New York, he joined NBCUniversal’s Spanish-speaking broadcast network, Telemundo as a Manager of Network Pricing. Currently, Lucas serves as the Director of Ad Sales Finance for Telemundo Media where he leads a team responsible for budgeting, forecasting, and reporting of revenue for Telemundo Network, mun2, as well as digital properties. He's also responsible for developing revenue estimates to determine if new programs, reality series, sports properties, or specials should be “green lit.”

Bryan Payne (BS '08) - After graduation, Bryan Payne joined Morgan Stanley as a New York based analyst covering global financial institutions. In the three year analyst program, Bryan focused on mergers and acquisitions, capital raising and risk transfer for Life and P&C insurers. He also served on Morgan Stanley’s Analyst Council and MSINC- a non-profit initiative inside the firm. After being directly promoted to Associate, Bryan joined the global Consumer Retail practice at Morgan Stanley covering home & personal care, food & beverage, and retail clients. Bryan majored in International Business, Finance, and Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant. He currently lives in New York with his wife, also a Moore School International Business graduate.
